DE-CIX, ‘Internet pour tous’ and UNITED SA launch ACIX

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) city of Kinshasa's Internet connectivity and web hosting company, UNITED, will host the neutral IX, which will be run by the non-governmental organization "Internet pour tous" (Internet for all).

Internet usage in the DRC, and particularly in Kinshasa, is exploding, growing by almost 30% year over year, supported by a sizable population and a promising digital ecosystem. The market is still underserved, however, as a result of the high cost of Internet connectivity and the absence of advanced interconnection services, according to Mohamad H. Ibrahim from the UNTED.

"Networks can exchange data locally and create a local ecosystem using ACIX. Data had to previously travel all the way down to South Africa and back up again in order for networks in East and West Africa to exchange information. We have experience working with DE-CIX, and we are aware of their professionalism and the increase in data speeds that comes with using their connection. The development of the Internet in the DRC and throughout Africa will benefit from the combination of DE-CIX's experience in building IXs with UNITED's knowledge of all forms of connectivity in the African environment. ”.

With plans to connect networks from all neighboring countries, ACIX, which was officially launched yesterday, is currently onboarding its first eleven networks.

As a part of the DE-CIX-as-a-Service (DaaS) initiative, DE-CIX will manage the new IX on behalf of "Internet pour tous.". The DaaS program includes installation, maintenance, provisioning, marketing, and sales support.

"Internet pour tous" and UNITED are initiatives that DE-CIX is proud to support. ACIX is slated to operate as an African hub for intra- and intercontinental traffic flows, according to DE-CIX CEO Ivo Ivanov.

"ACIX will create digital opportunities for Africa by bringing together African networks that are currently dispersed across neighboring nations, just as Southern Europe is creating a bridge for the delivery of international content and applications to Africa. By offering better cloud performance and user experience, better content and application performance, and more affordable and high-quality Internet access for businesses and individuals, this will enable the DRC to fully realize the potential of its emerging digital economy. ”.
